Startup of Dutch coal-fired power plant delayed

The start of full commercial operations for German utility RWE's new 777 MW Eemshaven A coal-fired unit in the Netherlands has been delayed by nearly one month to 31 January 2015.

According to Argus Media, the unit was previously due to come fully on line on 1 January, but the utility will use the extra time to conduct further boiler optimisations and the contractual trial run for the steam turbine.

Eemshaven A is one of four new higher-efficiency coal-fired units that were originally expected to come on line in the Netherlands this year or earlier, only to suffer delays. Unit B at RWE's Eemshaven plant, also 777 MW, is expected to be commissioned on 6 May next year, while Eon's 1070 MW Maasvlakte 3 unit is currently scheduled to come on line at the end of January. French GDF Suez's 724 MW Rotterdam 1 coal-fired unit is still undergoing its test phase, after missing a number of deadlines for commissioning. GDF Suez has not disclosed an updated start-up date.
